Why can’t women take compliments?

I did a little survey of my own which showed that women take compliments rather awkwardly, no matter how confident they are. Some deflect a praise, trying to be modest or taking it with a grain of salt.
A healthy level of self-esteem is necessary. Compliments are meant to be accepted, not watered-down by fear-infested comebacks. And sometimes its not just about receiving compliments but is also about giving them.
Its kind of a universal notion that a woman can never give a genuine compliment to another woman. I don’t believe women enjoy being cruel to each other. To me, it has more to do with our instinct. When we feel threatened (with an attractive woman around), we morph into a mean-girl mode.
